Dental sciences include all treatment related to teeth and gums. It is a highly specialized medical field and courses in dental sciences are meant for science students from biology stream. The modern dentistry is not just related to pulling out of decayed teeth putting braces on ill-shaped teeth. It is a much evolved and complex study of medicine where new innovations and techniques have completely changed the scene of dentistry. Today, the advent of new technologies and the usage of computers, lasers MRI, the field of dentistry has got a new edge and there are multiple areas of specialization within this field.

Courses in dentistry are offered by private and government colleges across India. On a rough estimate, there are more than 200 dental colleges in India. Nearly 12,000 people graduate from these colleges with a BDS degree every year. These colleges offer graduate and post graduate courses in dental sciences. Some institutes also offer two-year diploma courses in dental hygiene and dental mechanics. One needs to qualify a pre medical test (PMT) at the national or state level to qualify for admission into these courses. To crack the PMT is not an easy task. Thousands of students appear for this exam each year and the competition is quite tough. The paper tests the knowledge of students in the fields of Zoology, Botany, Physics, Chemistry. Some exams also test English and General Knowledge of students.

The minimum qualification to appear for a pre medical test to get admission into good dental institute is 10+2 standards. The minimum age of the candidate should be 17 years or above. Once you secure admission into a dental college, you will study for a four-year course, which would include pre-clinical and clinical training followed by one year of internship. This makes the total duration of BDS five years. After BDS, one can either start working straight away or enroll for an MDS course. The admission to MDS is also conducted through a PG entrance examination. MDS is a three-year course that is highly specialized. The career prospects of students grow manifold after doing MDS.

Other soft skills that are expected from students aspiring to become successful dentists are that they should an average scientific knowledge and logical reasoning skills. They should also have the ability to memorize and recall scientific facts and practices. Apart from this, they should be highly patient, perseverant and with a very cool temperament. The job of dentists is an arduous one and they have to deal with different kinds of people and cases everyday. So, it is very important that they have immense patience and good interpersonal skills.

There are numerous branches of dentistry in which one can specialize. These include Orthodontics, Periodontics, Pedodontics, Prosthodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Pathology, Forensic Dentistry, Oral Medicine, Operative Dentistry, Implant Dentistry, etc. With a specialization in one of these fields, one can make a career in that field. One can start private practice with an experienced dentist or work at a private or government hospital to gain experience. After enough experience, one can even start one?s own private practice. However, setting up a dentist?s clinic is very expensive because it requires installation of all high-tech equipments. So, it is advisable to gain some experience under the supervision of a senior dentist before starting one?s own practice.

After a short-term diploma course, one can become a dental hygienist. The job of a dental hygienist is to assist the main dentist during his clinical work. It involves cleansing the teeth and giving oral hygiene instructions to the patients. Dental care and oral treatments are required by patients at all ages and thus, dentists play a crucial role in the health care system of an individual. In recent times, cosmetic dentistry has emerged as a very promising career. More and more people aspire to having a perfect smile and undergo cosmetic changes on their teeth for this reason.

Thus, a good dental course from reputed institutes under the guidance of skilled and experienced mentors is very important to make a successful career in this field. Like other doctors, the job of dentists is also such that they are never out of demand.
