It was the late Tony Wilson of Factory records fame (Joy Division, New Order and The Hacienda) that christened the area Pendle Lancashire in an attempt to give it a second chance and had it not been for his untimely death maybe we?d be further on the way?
I paint a less than rosy picture but my intention is not to spread doom, gloom and despair throughout the epicentre of East Lancashire because there is hope and there are people out there trying to make a difference.
One such person is Eric Henshaw who has initiated a number of Business For Breakfast (B4B) groups across the M65 corridor. These business networking groups offer budding entrepreneurs in the area a chance to meet, learn about each other?s businesses and chew over the issues of the day.
Members sign up for the year and attend fortnightly breakfast meetings with a structured agenda however you need to do more than simply turn up in order to succeed.
There?s lots of business networking tips available in many books but these first few will set you on your way:
Firstly, don?t expect things to happen overnight. Networking is all about building relationships so getting to know like and trust people is an essential part of the process.

It is this art of spinning that can be used to help you at times on your resume. Here are some places on your resume where you never want to lie, but you may want to spin:

Many people today are working in situations where they feel that their bosses are not taking their ideas seriously, and may even feel that their jobs are no longer secure. But, what do you do if you are in a situation like this and have a new idea you would like to try for the business, or a project you would like to see done? What if you feel that your boss won?t give you the time of day ? never mind actually giving you a chance to try the new ideas out?
There is a way, but it can be scary for most people to try ? because it involves throwing a challenge out to your boss.
You need to be prepared for this to blow up in your face, and you will need some guts to attempt this. But, if your work situation has deteriorated to a point that you feel you have no other options, trying this might just give you a bit of peace in your workplace. It can be a bit of an all or nothing approach, but sometimes it may be the only option you have left.
First ? prepare. If you have a new idea or strategy that you would like to see implemented, but know that your boss will be confrontational about it, you need to have your entire plan carefully mapped out. You need to be ready to walk into your boss?s office and tell them that this is it ? and give your presentation with complete confidence. Make it very obvious that you worked hard on it.
Then ? throw down the challenge. This is where you tell your boss that if you are allowed to go ahead and follow this plan, but it doesn?t work out, you will leave quietly and not give your boss any problems.
However, you really need to understand when you should use this tactic and the situation you should be in first. When you have reached this point, you should be as close as possible already to either quitting because your boss has been making it impossible to continue working, or actually being fired. When you reach this stage, it becomes an all or nothing proposition, and you really have nothing left to lose. You might already have one foot out the door anyway, so this is your last ditch attempt at resolution.
It may be hard to believe, but this strategy actually does work ? but only if you have thought out your plan thoroughly and prepared for every circumstance. Yes, it?s that time of the year again. January is the month of mental and physical rehabilitation caused by festive excessiveness, the days never really detach themselves from night and pretty much everyone is depressed. Or in more convivial terms: suffering from winter blues.
We all have a healthy list of unofficial reasons for this national downer, but an official explanation central to this collective feeling is Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD as it?s more aptly recognised. According to the Mental Health Foundation, one in 100 Britons suffer from seasonal depression and many more generally feel, well, low.
Hands up if you?re currently experiencing spells of lethargy, cravings for sweet things and disruptive sleep? Yes? The good news is you?re not what the Mental Health Foundation would classify as ?fully depressed?; however, you are certainly a member of the winter blues society, which has over 500,000 representatives in the UK. (For the record this is not a certified group, but I thought the comfort of being part of a large statistic would help you with accepting the diagnosis some what.)
Ok, that?s enough of feeling sorry for ourselves. Unfortunately we can?t speed the seasons up and entice spring to wake from its slumber. Nor is it recommended we prescribe ?uplifting? drugs to our daily routines in order to shift our mood, but there are more natural ways to combat the blues. The days may be dark, but there is light at the end of our subconscious tunnel.
?With SAD, one theory is that light entering the eye causes changes in hormone levels in the body,? says Alison Kerry, from the mental health charity MIND. ?In our bodies, light functions to stop the production of the sleep hormone melatonin, making us wake up. It?s thought that SAD sufferers are affected by shorter daylight hours in the winter. They produce higher melatonin, causing lethargy and symptoms of depression.?
This theory certainly goes against the true SAD sufferer. If one isn?t sleeping well or is generally exhausted and low, one doesn?t want to get out of bed at the crack of dawn to appreciate the morning illuminations. However, by exposing yourself (or your eyes more specifically) to natural light for as long as possible during the day ? bearing in mind we?re only witnessing approximately seven to eight hours of daylight at the moment ? it will go some way in reigniting your dampened mental state. Now is the perfect time to relocate to the nearest window in your office to take in as much natural light as possible.
The office is often the nucleus of melancholy in the New Year, with colleagues equipped with sniffles, complaints and masks of sorrow ? this doesn?t necessarily help with you overcoming your own winter blues. We collectively share our New Year?s resolutions of improved diets and health regimes, but know deep inside that they may never materialise. However, exercise ? as much as we can loathe it ? is an ally when fighting the seasonal battle.
?There?s convincing evidence that 30 minutes vigorous exercise three times a week is effective against depression, and anecdotal evidence that lighter exercise will have a beneficial effect too,? says Dr Andrew McCulloch, chief executive of the Mental Health Foundation. ?If you have a tendency towards SAD, outdoor exercise will be have a double benefit, because you?ll gain some daylight.?
So officially we don?t need to run a marathon or climb Kilimanjaro to snap out of our low spirits; a short but exhilarating burst of activity during your working day will stimulate the mind, body and soul. Daily exertion is said to increase the level of the mood regulating chemical serotonin in the brain, in turn encouraging you to interact with your colleagues more and imparting a positive outlook to your day. If you?re fortunate enough to live in rural surroundings, the countryside is also a great remedy for cleansing the mind. MIND also suggests that a 60 minute walk everyday in an open environment is an effective and enjoyable way to beat the winter blues.
Regular exercise is great for personal revival, but what if a group is suffering from winter blues? You will need to think of ways to improve morale and mood with your friends and colleagues and not suffer in silence. As an employer in particular, happy personnel are central to seeing your business also get through the blues and not allowing productivity to dip. Virtuous exercise and upgraded diet all helps, but you need to think about the bigger picture when brining your team together.

Although the value of the internet as part of any serious marketing strategy cannot seriously be denied, it is not the whole answer to any marketing conundrum. The mantra goes that if you don't use the internet you are losing money. But how true is this? Well, there is an element of truth there. Every business should have a website, but not at the expense of offline advertising.
Until extremely recently there was no such thing as the internet and yet business people made millions through other marketing channels, from trade fairs to billboards, business cards to promotional gifts. I mention these because they are still extremely popular and productive marketing methods. I guess I'm trying to say that there is more to marketing than the internet, and never forget it. Don't rely on it solely: make it an important part of the mix but don't put all your eggs in the internet basket.
In this article I intend to bring your attention back to offline marketing. By that I mean non-internet marketing. Why should you do this? I say it is because it's cost-effective and highly profitable to do so. Even if you are an affiliate marketer online, consider offline strategies to promote your website and products. Go back to basics. Use the time honored ways and means of marketing, such as word-of-mouth, joint ventures, direct mail, promotions and sponsorships. Hey, you can publicize your URL on the back of all these campaigns.
Pay attention to your business cards. Hand them out as a matter of course to absolutely everyone you meet. Yes, they can have your website address on them. In fact, they should. But no visit to a website can compare with meeting the business owner, looking him in the eye and being handed his business card. Hand them to the people you meet in school, mall, restaurant and even people at the bus station. All of them are potential customers.
Send out news releases. This is the way to make news spread like wildfire through radio, TV and the print media. This strategy may take time but it definitely delivers customers. And stickers! Place them everywhere that's legal and fun. Place them on your bumper and the bumpers of friends and customers. Put your website URL on stickers out there. You will get more visits, more business and ultimately more revenue.
Become an expert and a specialist speaker. Speak at local events and get asked to speak as an expert in your field. Believe me, once you are perceived as being an expert customers won't even bother to look at your website. They will come straight to you to do business. So you see there is not reason to confine your marketing efforts to the internet. There are hundreds of ways to market offline. You are limited only by your imagination.

Many times over the past year, I?ve been tempted to write about the issue of paying retention bonuses to executives, especially those who?ve often helped run their organizations (and the economy) into difficulties by making poor, extravagant, or questionable business and ethical decisions.
The network news, radio talk shows, business publications, weekly news magazines, and daily newspapers are full of such stories, often regarding executives in financial services and other firms.
With few exceptions, I?m opposed to such bonuses.
They?re too often another form of compensation without significant or long term benefit to the employer.
And they?re costly in other ways.
Here are 7 reasons not to award executive retention bonuses:
1) Does the executive really intend to leave? Or are such bonuses just becoming ?expected?? Plus, it?s easier to keep someone than going through the time and expense of a search.
2) Do other organizations really want them?while paying substantially more to hire them? Remember that if another organization wants them, they?re likely going to have to match their compensation, retention bonus, and increase other forms of compensation, perks, and benefits.
3) Do you really want to retain them given the problems they?ve helped create? Using contrarian thinking for a minute, some people would argue this is exactly why to keep them?that since they got us into difficulty, they must now have the wisdom to get us out of it.
However, in your experience, is this what usually happens?or do such executives typically get their organizations in more difficulty?
4) Even at their level, the current employment market isn?t great. Can they really just walk out the door with ?a new employer by the end of the week??
5) Would fresh outside thinking be beneficial? Think of Ford Motor Company going outside its industry and hiring Alan Mulally from Boeing; it?s not the only reason, but only Ford didn?t ask for government bailout funding among the Big Three.
6) Reduced morale among employees not receiving retention bonuses, but who get the day to day work of the organization done. Retention bonuses given to highly paid executives whose performance isn?t stellar (and often even when it is), creates resentment and feelings of a lack of value among other employees.
Sooner or later, organizations pay for these bonuses in reduced effort, thinking, customer service, and increased employee turnover costs.
7) You?re often buying their loyalty for a short period of time. Retention bonuses are usually a short, not a mid or long term solution; if they want to leave for another employer without as many business problems, is a retention bonus really going to keep them?
Besides, in most cases, there?s usually no requirement that assures they?ll stay for at least a year or more; how much time are most organizations really buying?
As with almost anything, there are exceptions. Here are 4 reasons to pay such bonuses, but as a last choice.
1. The executive has proprietary information that must be protected.
2. They?re essential to retaining one or more vital customers.
3. They?re a ?subject matter expert;? have needed skills others don?t; or replacing them would take a very long time and be very costly.
4. Losing them to a competitor would be highly damaging.
Which weighs more? The reasons to pay most executive retention bonuses, or not to pay them?
Instead, implement employee retention strategies across all levels of the organization, and reduce employee turnover costs by paying higher wages and making improvements.

They?re too often another form of compensation without significant or long term benefit to the employer.
And they?re costly in other ways.
Here are 7 reasons not to award executive retention bonuses:
1) Does the executive really intend to leave? Or are such bonuses just becoming ?expected?? Plus, it?s easier to keep someone than going through the time and expense of a search.
2) Do other organizations really want them?while paying substantially more to hire them? Remember that if another organization wants them, they?re likely going to have to match their compensation, retention bonus, and increase other forms of compensation, perks, and benefits.
3) Do you really want to retain them given the problems they?ve helped create? Using contrarian thinking for a minute, some people would argue this is exactly why to keep them?that since they got us into difficulty, they must now have the wisdom to get us out of it.
However, in your experience, is this what usually happens?or do such executives typically get their organizations in more difficulty?
4) Even at their level, the current employment market isn?t great. Can they really just walk out the door with ?a new employer by the end of the week??
5) Would fresh outside thinking be beneficial? Think of Ford Motor Company going outside its industry and hiring Alan Mulally from Boeing; it?s not the only reason, but only Ford didn?t ask for government bailout funding among the Big Three.
6) Reduced morale among employees not receiving retention bonuses, but who get the day to day work of the organization done. Retention bonuses given to highly paid executives whose performance isn?t stellar (and often even when it is), creates resentment and feelings of a lack of value among other employees.
Sooner or later, organizations pay for these bonuses in reduced effort, thinking, customer service, and increased employee turnover costs.
7) You?re often buying their loyalty for a short period of time. Retention bonuses are usually a short, not a mid or long term solution; if they want to leave for another employer without as many business problems, is a retention bonus really going to keep them?
Besides, in most cases, there?s usually no requirement that assures they?ll stay for at least a year or more; how much time are most organizations really buying?
As with almost anything, there are exceptions. Here are 4 reasons to pay such bonuses, but as a last choice.
1. The executive has proprietary information that must be protected.
2. They?re essential to retaining one or more vital customers.
3. They?re a ?subject matter expert;? have needed skills others don?t; or replacing them would take a very long time and be very costly.
4. Losing them to a competitor would be highly damaging.
Which weighs more? The reasons to pay most executive retention bonuses, or not to pay them?
Instead, implement employee retention strategies across all levels of the organization, and reduce employee turnover costs by paying higher wages and making improvements.

You see, for results to change, the steps leading to them must change. We must change what we do! Ok you're saying: "Like I don't know that already?"
Over simplified yes, but I have to tell you, my experience coaching thousands of professionals for the past 15 years has shown me this is a global problem. My 8 years producing seminars for Tony Robbins, and observing the hundreds of thousands of people attending his programs also proved this critical fact: Many people want to reach new levels of success, expertise and confidence - without changing their behavior.
Convincing people to change how they think about their business is the greatest challenge. As soon as we change our thinking, we'll not only change our income, but also our life!
What changes are we talking about here? The kind that says things will improve as soon as you get "your name out there," as soon as you establish a "reputation"?
Yes, these can help. . . a little. Yet, if all it took was name recognition, most of us would be rich. And, since so many business and sales people mail out ads with names and pictures on them, their phones must be ringing off the hook, right?
Reality is, the phones don't ring, at least not often enough. There's a long wait between calls, sometimes years and years before recognition and image bring in big money. If you have lots of time and money, just keep doing what you're doing.
But if you want to speed up the process, stop doing what you're doing now and start marketing in a different, direct way. People will call. They will respond because they will be interested in your product or service.
You must get prospects and clients to respond to the bottom line.
When YOU recognize that having other people recognize you doesn't pay the bills, you'll be on your way. When you accept that your mind has to become a marketer's mind, you'll begin the process of a new life. When you realize that top-producing business and sales people don't do what everyone else does.. . and that behaving differently is the reason they're top-producing, you'll make a big breakthrough!
It's true. How you see the world determines how the world sees you. In other words, if you think the world is full of people who are interested in what you have to sell, and that your job is to find those people through marketing - you will find them
If, on the other hand, you feel your "Professionalism, good name, nice brochure or a good website" are enough to make people want your services and products, but you are not making sales, isn't it time for a paradigm shift?
We always get what we want - always - if we have the psychological strength to focus on it, filtering out all the empty chatter that surrounds us which drowns out what is really most important!

Doing What You Love, Or Loving What You Do
We are in the midst of a global recession, if you have a job, count yourself lucky. Lucky or not, the UK workforce is not a happy one. The CIPD?s most recent Employee Outlook survey unveiled that job satisfaction has plunged from 46 to 37 in 2009.
Does loving your job really mean you have to do what you enjoy? Or do you merely need to change your attitude towards it?
Chant?l du Plooy investigates why people stay in jobs they don?t like what the advantages are when you love your job? And she talks to three people who each have a different approach to being passionate about what you do.
Making you vocation your vacation
Mark Twain, who wrote best sellers like The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, once said: ?The secret of success is making your vocation your vacation.?
Ben Southall, the 34 year old ?Best Job? winner from Hampshire has unknowingly taken Mark Twain?s words to heart. Ben competed against thousands of entrants to win Tourism Queensland?s caretaker position. The package includes living in a three bedroom beach house in Australia?s Hamilton Island and experiencing all the adventures in the area, while getting paid generously to do so. All Ben needs to do is blog and brag about his adventures.
Obviously, not everyone can become island caretakers and the good news is not everyone wants to be. Luckily we all differ from each other and your idea of a dream job might be your neighbour?s worst nightmare.
But if people are truly unsatisfied with their vocations, why aren?t they doing something about it?
According to Paula Caligiuri, a professor in Human Resource Management, people stay in jobs they hate due to financial responsibility, retention incentives and fear of change. They could also stay because they feel they have invested too many years at a specific company or due to a pessimistic mindset where they belief that nobody really enjoys their work.
However, when you make your vocation your vacation there are various obvious advantages. Seeing as most of your day is spent at work, loving your job will get you to enjoy your time there. When you love what you do, you will take extra care when doing it and this could result in higher quality work. And most importantly, if you find enjoyment in your 9 5, Monday to Friday due to job inspiration it can contribute to give your life meaning, purpose and direction.
Live to work, or work to live
Jean (27) an accountant from London doesn?t love his job. However, he stays in it because he makes enough money to do the things he does love, makes up for it.
?I use my money to go on exotic holidays, eat out and do fun things. That to me, makes it worth going to work everyday,? he admitted.
Kerry (29) a former nurse from Manchester gave up nursing to live out a passion which was imprinted in her heart since the age of 12.
?I have always wanted to be a photographer,? Kerry said.
?My parents on the other hand, wanted me to get a proper degree behind my name. So I did. But after two degrees in nursing and working in the profession for several years, I knew I definitely had another calling.?
With the support of her husband as well as her parents, Kerry had the courage to pursue a new career at the age of 28.
?I left the clinical intensive care unit and a neat nurse?s uniform for the crazy arty surroundings of a photography school where nothing is too weird or out of the box. I took every last penny I had, took out a huge loan and started my business in the already over populated field of work,? she said.
?My business is 8 months old now and doing extremely well. I remember a quote from Richard Branson, where he said that if you love what you do, you never need to ?work? another day in your life. Now that I do what I love I can agree with him. I am totally a different person, wife and mother as a result of it,? she enthused.
Changing your attitude/ Happiness at work
Recently Chiumento Consulting commissioned a survey called Happiness at Work Index which unveiled that 20 of UK employees are unhappy at work.
According to the survey, happiness at work has more to do with communication from top management than it has to do with how much money you get or what you do.
Happiness at work is also a state of mind, which an individual contributes to their environment, Dr Laurel Edmunds, Head of Research at iOpener, believes. ?You have to start with a positive outlook, no matter what your circumstances and then good things will come to you. It?s a bottom up process,? he said.
Liz (32) a sales manager from Birmingham also believes that motivation in the workplace comes from within. ?My passion is to be successful at whatever I do. To do every task I am given, at which ever level to the best of my ability,? she said.
?I love working with my hands and being creative through painting, decorating and baking but I get to do these things after hours. In the mornings I put on my uniform and adjust my attitude positively. ?Through gaining successful results, I find happiness,? said Liz.
Quick tips to change your career
It is possible that some people can stick through a career they don?t particularly love in order to subsidise after hour enjoyment. It is also possible for others to fine tune their feelings towards their vocation because they happen to be great at it. But for some people a longing for a specific career is too consuming to be substituted with money, success or attitude adjustments.
If you want to change careers, here are five tips to help you on your way:
1. Decide what career you really want and go for it
2. Get professional help: Investigate your new career. Talk to people who are in the profession and visit online resources like:

3. Formulate a plan: Don?t quit your current job unless you have a plan in place. A career change is exciting but can also create unnecessary financial strain if you don?t take precautions

5. Do it: By sticking to your goals and making the necessary sacrifices you will be on your way to your new career in no time
