Buyer fraud, however, is not a phenomenon unique to eBay. It is also rampant in the "offline" world in similar measures by product type. Buyer fraud can include:

? Unwarranted returns. Often these occur when a buyer purchases, then either uses an item or exchanges component(s) in it for broken components from a similar item, then attempts to make a return for a refund.

? Service blackmail. This occurs when a buyer uses some kind of leverage to obtain better pricing, additional goods or accessories, or enhanced service from a seller. Often this takes the form of feedback or credit card (including PayPal) chargeback threats?the buyer promises that something bad will happen to the seller or the seller's ability to do business if demands are not met.

? Payment fraud. The most common types of payment fraud are credit card fraud and PayPal payments made with stolen accounts, both of which can leave the seller holding the bag.

Also common are bad checks or bad money orders.

? Auction tampering. There are a few simple steps that you can take to try to counter the most common types of buyer fraud. Though they aren't by any means a panacea, they can at least offer you some cover in dispute resolution and some hope of a positive outcome:

? Cover yourself in your item descriptions. Always state both the condition of your item and the entirety of your return policy very clearly and adamantly in your item listing. If you will accept returns or exchanges on the item, state also the limits of your return or exchange policy, including time limits, restocking fees, and shipment responsibilities/refunds. For AS-IS items, clearly state "This item is sold AS-IS, with no warranty expressed or implied, no refunds or exchanges will be granted for any reason whatsoever; BUYER BEWARE!"

? Don't be afraid to leave negative feedback. Negative feedback is the only way other sellers have to know about your horrible experience with a bad buyer.

As a seller, it may help you to think of feedback as a kind of seller's union?if all sellers leave clear feedback about all buyers, every seller will have that much more potential information about trading partners at his or her fingertips. Furthermore, eBay members whose feedback descends far enough into negative territory are automatically suspended?meaning that negative feedback is also a great way to eventually get bad buyers off of the site.

? Block difficult or problem buyers from your auctions. Use the tools on the eBay website to cancel bids from or block buyers with whom you've had problems in the past so that they are not able to bid on your auctions any longer. If you have blocked a bidder and suspect that they have come back under a new user ID to bid again, contact eBay and report it. They will likely be suspended as a result.

When a buyer opens a dispute with eBay or a credit card company, your best defense as a seller is to keep a copy of all shipping information on hand, including delivery date as certified by the shipper. ? Report bad buyers immediately. In the cases of auction tampering and payment fraud, notify eBay immediately. Not only does eBay take the threat of fraud and site tampering very seriously, they will also take steps to ensure that such members are banned from the site and (whenever eBay is aware of them) kept out.

? Take payment fraud prevention measures. Both PayPal and most financial institutions hosting merchant accounts have clearly stated policies about the relationships between accepted payments and account information for those payments (including names, shipping addresses, and other information). Read the seller account information provided by your payment processor for details on accepting payments and making shipments in ways that ensure minimal risk to you.

? Protect yourself from bad payments. Avoid accepting personal checks, money orders, and other forms of "paper" payment unless you are willing to accept the risk that they inevitably present. If you accept PayPal payments, connect your PayPal account to a bank account dedicated specifically to your eBay activity, and empty it of funds regularly to ensure that no buyer can initiate a large chargeback or fraudulent claim and freeze an unduly large portion of your assets.

Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it) many marketing challenges can be traced back to a handful of marketing mistakes. Today, I'll talk about the top 5 marketing mistakes business owners make.

1. Too broad a target market (who you're selling your product or service to). If I ask you who your customer is and you answer "anyone with a pulse," then I'm talking to you. Even if your product or service CAN help just about anyone on the planet, not everyone is going to buy it. They don't have the money or the interest or whatever. And when you try and target everyone, you really end up targeting no one. The way to start making money (not to mention getting better results with your marketing) is to narrow your target market so you're only talking to one specific group. However, there are pitfalls with that as well, as we see in the next mistake.

2. The wrong target market. This happens when you've chosen the wrong target market. What do I mean by wrong target market? They either aren't interested in buying your product or service or they don't have the money. Let's look at the first one, lack of interest. What happens here is the word "need" is misused. "I know my target market needs this, therefore they'll buy it." Not so.

This happens a lot with people in the health and wellness field and it typically goes something like this. You are passionate about teaching yoga and you want to reach committed couch potatoes. Do committed couch potatoes need to be doing yoga? No question. Do they want to be doing yoga? Probably not or they wouldn't be committed couch potatoes.

So let's look at the second one, lack of funds. This happens when you're going after a customer base that desperately wants what you're selling but can't afford it. For instance, a high-end spa targeting low-income single mothers. Would this target market adore the stress relieving benefits of a day at a spa? No doubt. Can they afford it? Probably not.

Now, that example is obvious, but it's not always so cut and dried. Especially with service professionals. Business and life coaches for instance. They're so passionate about what they do and they want to see people succeed, they go after a target market that may really want and need their services, but they can't afford them. So these coaches lower their fees or coach for free or trade out (even if they aren't interested in the trade) or something else that isn't terribly helpful to their own business success. Bottom line -- make sure you choose a target market that not only can afford your product or service but also want it. (Desperate for it is better yet.)

3. Looking for your target market in all the wrong places. This is a situation where "build it and they will come" doesn't work. Once you know who your target market is, you need to go to them. And you shouldn't waste your time in places where you won't find them.

Let's say your target market is Fortune 500 companies. Is hobnobbing at your local Chamber of Commerce going to pay off for you? Probably not. But buying a targeted list and putting together a direct mail campaign? Much better idea. Or, for instance, a friend of mine just realized a new niche target market she was going after doesn't spend much time online. And, you guessed it, she does most of her marketing online. So, she either has to change her niche market or change how she markets to them.

Once you've selected a viable target market, make sure you're putting your marketing time and dollars into places where they hang out.

4. Not a compelling message. Okay, you know you've got a good target market and you know how to reach them. But you're still not getting any results. Now the problem might be your message. People have a lot of choices on where to spend their money. You have to give them a very compelling reason why they should spend their hard earned money with you.

Here's where it makes sense to brush up on your copywriting skills (writing promotional copy) or hire someone to write your copy for you.

5. Not getting in front of your target market often enough. So you've run one ad. Or mailed one postcard. Or attended one networking event. And the work isn't pouring in the door.

It's a sad fact that you need to consistently get in front of your target market time and time again. Unfortunately, for the most part, your target market won't wake up and say "Gee, I have to give so-and-so some money today" without some encouragement on your part. Remember, it's not your target market's job to remember you. It's your job to remind them you're here and would love to have their business.

Consumer confidence in media has declined dramatically. Only 12% of consumers trust Television news, down from 55% 3 years ago. People who believe organizations are also down from 28% to 12%.

The simple and ugly fact is they don't believe you as much as they used to. What makes these people so sceptical?

I believe there are two primary reasons:

1. North Americans are exposed to 4 times the amount of advertising Europeans are exposed to. One study shows the average North American decision maker receives upwards of 30,000 commercial messages per day. This mostly means messages get lost in the clutter.

2. Many college graduates have done at least one marketing course and so have a much better feel for hype and what?s going on. Too much marketing is simply hype and knowledgeable people see right through it.

So what can the average business owner do to combat this?

1. Generate word-of-mouth marketing. Referrals are still the most powerful method of marketing because people trust their friends as credible sources of data. Referrals are free and close at 5 times the rate of leads from all other sources. 85% of all buying decisions are made on the recommendations of others.

2. Influence people who are centers of influence. Why do you think firms like Nike and L?Oreal use celebrities like Michael Jordan and Penelope Cruz to endorse their products. Who would be the most likely people to influence your customers?

-- Have fun! Write about what you know and love and it will quickly cease being a chore and become one of your favorite parts of your week!

In this box, you can tell a little bit about yourself, like the name and location of your business. It could even say "I'm So-and-So, mother of three in Kalamazoo, Mi." It doesn't matter. What does matter is that this is where your link goes.

Once your link is published in all those About the Author boxes on all those different websites, search engines will start to see you. That means your PageRank will improve and you will begin to move up in search engine results. I've seen my results go nowhere but up since I started my campaign.
